97% of 12-year-olds in New Zealand participate in extracurricular activities, according to new research from the University of Auckland's Growing Up in New Zealand longitudinal study. Sport was the most popular activity, with 88% of children regularly engaging in it. 12-year-olds from homes with extended family and those of Asian, Pacific, and MELAA heritage participated more than those of European heritage.
