NIST physicist Sae Woo Nam, a pioneer in single-photon detectors, passed away on Jan. 21, 2024, at 53, after a 14-month battle with brain cancer. During his 25-year career at NIST, Nam led groundbreaking work on single-photon detectors used in quantum computing, quantum physics, and dark matter research. His team developed the world's most efficient single-photon detector in 2010, detecting 99% of photons.
