European consumer groups accuse Meta of violating GDPR with its data processing and "pay or consent" system.
European consumer groups from eight countries have filed complaints against Meta, accusing the company of illegally processing user data and using its "pay or consent" system as a smokescreen for privacy breaches. The groups argue that Meta is violating the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and call the system "a smokescreen to obscure the real problem of massive, illegal data processing of users." The complaints are the latest in a series of challenges between the EU and Meta, with the EU's data watchdog, the EDPB, due to decide in the coming weeks whether a fee system like Meta's violates the bloc's data privacy laws.
