A year after the Oriental Mindoro oil spill, only half of P3 billion compensation claims have been paid to affected locals, with P1.6 billion paid so far.

A year after a major oil spill in Oriental Mindoro, only half of the total compensation claims have been paid to affected locals, according to Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny T. Pimentel. Out of the P3 billion in compensation claims, nearly P1.6 billion have been paid so far, with 35,576 individuals and entities filing claims against tanker MT Princess Empress. The International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds) in cooperation with The Shipowners Club, a mutual vessel insurance association in Luxembourg, have been responsible for the payouts.
