Xian, China, offers lottery tickets to promote weddings and boost birth rate amid population decline.

China's city of Xian plans to give out lottery tickets to newlywed couples presenting a marriage certificate in an effort to boost weddings and the birth rate. The population has fallen for two consecutive years, with new births dropping to about half of 2016 levels. Marriages hit a record low in 2022. The campaign will run from March 1 until November 30, with authorities spending 700,000 yuan ($97,000) on the lottery tickets.
