SafeWork NSW referred to the NSW anti-corruption watchdog over a $1.34m silica monitoring system purchase despite concerns about its effectiveness.

NSW's workplace health and safety regulator, SafeWork NSW, has been referred to the state's anti-corruption watchdog over the purchase of $1.34m real-time silica monitoring system, despite concerns about its effectiveness. The NSW Auditor-General's report criticized SafeWork NSW for failing to use data strategically and not informing the public of its performance, prompting the referral to the ICAC. The regulator took eight years to respond to the risk of silica dust, which can cause fatal lung diseases, linked to manufactured stone products.
