Maryam Nawaz, a senior leader of Pakistan's Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, has become the first-ever female Chief Minister of Punjab province in Pakistan, receiving 220 votes in the 371-member Punjab Assembly. Maryam, who is the daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has emerged as the most prominent political heir of her family after her father's disqualification in 2017. Her election victory has been dubbed as the "victory of every woman, every mother, every sister" by the new chief minister.
