Bariatric surgery provided better long-term blood glucose control in obese Type 2 diabetes patients than medical therapy, with sustained benefits up to 12 years post-surgery.

A study by Cleveland Clinic and three other US medical centers found that bariatric surgery offers better long-term control of blood glucose levels in obese patients with Type 2 diabetes compared to medical therapy. The study, involving 262 participants, showed that those in the surgery group experienced an average 20% weight loss compared to 8% in the medical/lifestyle group, with improved blood glucose control and higher rates of diabetes remission. The benefits were sustained up to 12 years post-surgery.
