U.S. student loan borrowers can reduce or eliminate debt through a one-time "payment count adjustment" by the Department of Education, with qualifying loans consolidated by April 30.
Student loan borrowers in the U.S. have a one-time opportunity to reduce or eliminate their debt through a "payment count adjustment" conducted by the Department of Education this summer. This applies to loans with repayment periods from July 1, 1994, and could lower monthly payments based on borrowers' income and family size. To qualify, some loans must be consolidated into a direct-consolidation loan with the U.S. Department of Education by April 30.
