Three men in NSW have been charged by the Cybercrime Squad in connection with an SMS phishing scam that allegedly sent over 80 million fraudulent messages. Strike Force Kanbi, which investigated the use of SIM boxes, worked with telecommunications networks to locate the devices responsible for the scam. Police arrested the men, aged 35, 37, and 43, during two search warrants in Burwood, finding large amounts of SIM cards, identity information, and cannabis. The men were charged with various offenses and denied bail, appearing in Burwood Local Court on February 16 and set to reappear on March 1. The police urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
