South Australia's government and GFG Alliance, owner of Whyalla Steelworks, will explore a deal for the steelworks to use hydrogen from a publicly funded power station near Whyalla, set to open in 2026. The $593m hydrogen plan seeks to transition to clean energy, stimulate the state economy, and export to other regions. The steelworks is already phasing out coal-based steelmaking and reducing CO2 emissions.
