Daphne Steele, the UK's first black NHS matron, received a blue plaque at St Winifred's maternity home in Ilkley.
Daphne Steele, the first black matron in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), has been honored with the first official blue plaque outside London at the former St Winifred's maternity home in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. Steele, born in Guyana and arriving in the UK in 1951, made a significant impact on the healthcare industry. The blue plaque scheme expansion, made possible by a change in the law, will allow the public to submit ideas for commemorations in their local areas starting in early summer 2024.
