The UK's General Medical Council (GMC) apologizes for striking off or regulating gay doctors under homophobic laws now repealed.
The UK's General Medical Council (GMC) has issued a formal apology to gay doctors who were struck off or faced regulatory action due to their sexuality, under now-repealed homophobic laws. The GMC's chair, Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen, said the regulator was "truly sorry" for taking regulatory action against at least 40 male doctors who had convictions under homophobic laws, with at least eight of them being struck off the medical register. The cases date back to the 1890s, with the last confirmed case of a doctor being struck off in 1966. The GMC said it was issuing the apology for taking regulatory action against doctors who, in historic cases, had convictions under now-repealed homophobic laws.
