Tunisia has intercepted over 75,000 illegal migrants trying to enter Europe via the Mediterranean Sea route to Italy in 2023, more than double the number in 2022, according to the private radio station Mosaique FM. Tunisian security forces have intensified crackdowns on illegal immigration to the Italian island of Lampedusa, with operations extending from the southeastern province of Sfax to other provinces.
