New Hampshire's Executive Council unanimously denied a pardon hearing request for Robert McLaughlin, the former Hampton police officer convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the 1998 killing of his neighbor, Robert Cushing Sr. The case contributed to the successful push to repeal New Hampshire's death penalty, led by Cushing's son, state Representative Robert "Renny" Cushing. McLaughlin had previously exhausted his state-level appeals and appealed in federal court, where his argument was rejected.
