Republican dissenters sink a GOP ‘flat’ tax plan in Kansas.

Kansas Republicans failed to override Governor Laura Kelly's veto of a flat tax bill, falling three votes short of the 84 needed to advance the proposal to the Senate. The GOP-led Kansas House had previously passed the bill, which would have implemented a 5.25% flat state income tax rate, eliminated the state sales tax on groceries, and created a tax exemption for all Social Security income. The failure to override the veto leaves the future of the flat tax proposal uncertain, and GOP lawmakers are now considering alternative tax cut plans.
