Indiana Senate Committee approves HB 1235, a Republican-backed bill ending Gary's 25-year lawsuit against handgun makers, limiting local governments' ability to sue gun manufacturers.

Indiana's Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law approved a Republican-backed bill, HB 1235, to end Gary's 25-year-long lawsuit against handgun makers. The bill would remove the ability of cities, states, and political subdivisions in Indiana to sue gun and ammunition manufacturers in nearly all cases, reserving authority for the state attorney general. It will be eligible for revision and approval by the full Senate. Gary Mayor Eddie Melton urges lawmakers to not interfere with the lawsuit, arguing that the legislation sets a poor precedent and undermines local governments' ability to protect citizens.
