A new study published in Nature Medicine links excessive niacin (vitamin B3) intake to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic discovered that a breakdown product of excess niacin, 4PY, is associated with heart attacks, strokes, and other adverse cardiac events. The findings raise concerns about the necessity of continued niacin fortification in food staples and question the safety of over-the-counter niacin supplements.
