Meta and the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) partner to create a WhatsApp fact-checking helpline for deepfakes and AI-generated content, launching in March 2024.

Meta and the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) have announced a partnership to create a dedicated fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp to combat deepfakes and deceptive AI-generated content. The helpline, available to the public from March 2024, will allow users to flag deepfakes by sending them to a WhatsApp chatbot that offers multilingual support in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The MCA will establish a central Deepfake Analysis Unit (DAU) to manage incoming messages on the WhatsApp helpline, working alongside member fact-checking organizations and industry partners to assess and verify content, debunk false claims, and mitigate the spread of misinformation. This initiative is part of Meta's pledge under the Tech Accord to combat deceptive uses of AI in elections and aims to promote transparency solutions and policies, as well as empower users with resources and tools to identify AI-generated media.
