Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, who has extensive operational experience along India's borders with China and Pakistan, has taken over as the Army Vice Chief. He replaces Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar, who has been appointed as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the crucial Udhampur-based Northern Command. Dwivedi is considered the front-runner to become the Army Chief when current Chief Gen Manoj Pande retires on May 31.
