Scientists have discovered Down Syndrome in the DNA of ancient bones from seven infants, including a 5,500-year-old specimen, through analyzing the genomes of nearly 10,000 ancient individuals. The research, from Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, identified six cases of Down Syndrome and one of Edwards Syndrome in remains from various time periods and locations. The findings suggest that individuals with Down Syndrome were cared for and appreciated in their ancient societies, as their remains were found within settlements and accompanied by special items.
