Cheryl Johnson honored with the 2023 Freedom Award.

Cheryl Johnson, the 36th House clerk, was honored with the 2023 Freedom Award from the United States Capitol Historical Society for her extraordinary dedication to freedom, democracy, and representative government. Johnson served during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack and the extended election of the House speaker. Both Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy praised her work, with McCarthy stating that Johnson was a rarity in American history as a House clerk appointed by both Democratic and Republican speakers.
