British Columbia veteran politician announces departure from the legislature.

British Columbia veteran politician Mike de Jong announced his departure from the legislature after a 30-year career in government and opposition. First elected as a B.C. Liberal in 1994, de Jong is considering seeking the nomination to run in the upcoming federal election for the Conservatives, although he has not made a formal decision. If he does decide to run federally, it will likely be in the Abbotsford area where he lives. De Jong held several cabinet posts in successive B.C. Liberal governments and plans to remain as a member of the Opposition BC United for the spring legislative session, but will not run in the upcoming fall election.
