British Columbia to invest $76.6m in upgrading Barrowtown Pump Station to improve flood resilience and protect critical infrastructure.

The Canadian province of British Columbia has announced plans for a $76.6 million investment to upgrade the critical Barrowtown Pump Station in Abbotsford. The upgrades aim to improve flood resilience in the region and protect critical infrastructure, including the Fraser Valley's flood protection system. The Barrowtown Pump Station, built in 1983, was at risk of being overwhelmed by floodwaters during the 2021 disaster, prompting local residents to volunteer to bail water and place sandbags around the station. The upgrades include a six-metre wall to prevent the station from shutting down in future floods and replacing pump motors to improve efficiency and pumping capacity.
