13-year-old Belgian boy Lucas becomes first child cured of brainstem glioma (DIPG) after treatment in BIOMEDE trial with drug everolimus.
A six-year-old boy named Lucas from Belgium, who was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer called brainstem glioma, is now the first child in the world to have been cured of the disease.
The full name of this rare brain tumor is diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).
It is typically diagnosed in around 300 children in the United States and up to 100 in France each year.
Despite being given a grim prognosis, Lucas is now 13 years old and has no trace of the tumor.
This breakthrough offers real hope for a cure for at least some children diagnosed with this rare brain tumor.
