Puerto Rico faces escalating costs for hurricane and earthquake recovery projects.

A federal audit has found that large-scale rebuilding projects in Puerto Rico are still pending, despite millions of dollars of federal funding being available. As a result, the islands ongoing recovery process after hurricanes Irma and Maria, and a series of earthquakes, is progressing slowly. Less than 10% of the available $23 billion federal funds have been spend due to the soaring costs and bottlenecks threatening full rebuilding. The report emphasized that Puerto Rico's recovery has been ongoing for more than six years since hurricanes Irma and Maria, and also mentioned the damage caused by earthquakes in 2019 and 2020.
