Health authorities in Queensland, Australia, warn of a potential virus outbreak.

Health authorities in Queensland, Australia, have warned of a potential outbreak of Ross River virus, with thousands of cases anticipated in the coming weeks. The virus, spread by mosquito bites, has already shown "very high" levels in mosquito populations across the state. In 2020, there were 3,381 cases in Queensland, and the number of positive mosquito traps in the first few months of this year has exceeded the total number recorded in the previous summer season. Symptoms include fever, swollen and painful joints, and a rash. There is currently no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, so prevention methods include avoiding mosquito bites through the use of insect repellent, avoiding outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and wearing clothing that covers arms, legs, and feet.
