On February 14, Georgia Power announced that Unit 4 of the Vogtle nuclear power expansion in Waynesboro had achieved initial criticality safely. Nuclear fission inside the reactor has become self-sustaining, generating heat that will be used to produce steam in future electricity generation. The Unit 4 reactors at Plant Vogtle now have to undergo further testing before they can be declared commercially operational, which is currently expected to be in the second quarter of 2024.
