Quebec's Justice Minister, Simon Jolin-Barrette, plans to enhance the role of justices of the peace, allowing them to oversee criminal court appearances and bail hearings, freeing up around 15 to 20 provincial court judges to address other matters. The changes aim to reduce the number of cases dropped due to deadlines set by the 2016 landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision, known as the Jordan decision. The province will also utilize video conferencing more frequently.
