Nova Scotia Liberal leader Zach Churchill to cut HST in bid to rebuild support.

Nova Scotia's Liberal leader, Zach Churchill, is committing to cut the provincial portion of the harmonized sales tax by two percentage points if his party wins the next general election. The tax cut is proposed to reduce sales tax to 13% from 15%, making it the lowest in Atlantic Canada. Churchill estimated the tax cut would put an average of $650 a year in the pockets of each taxpayer and $1,300 for a two-person household. Despite the tax cut potentially reducing provincial revenues by $500 million, Churchill argues that increased tax revenues from the HST and federal transfers make the tax reduction possible.
