On February 10, 2024, Greg Underwood, the former Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney, passed away at 68 due to cancer complications. He was the first Black man to hold the position and played a significant role in implementing progressive prosecution in Norfolk. His legacy includes declining prosecution for simple marijuana possession cases, not seeking cash bail, and establishing Virginia's first Family Justice Center. Underwood's contributions will be greatly missed by the community.
