Auckland Airport expands composting, diverting 13.5 tonnes food waste, aims to reduce landfill by 20% by 2030.

Auckland Airport is expanding its composting program to reduce waste sent to landfill by 20% from 2019 levels by 2030. The airport has already diverted 13.5 tonnes of food waste from the domestic terminal in the past three months. The composting program sends coffee grinds, food scraps, and compostable cups to Envirofert for repurposing as organic compost for fruit and vegetable growers in the region. The airport is also working on improving recycling systems and encouraging the use of washable, dine-in cups, crockery, and cutlery to reduce waste.
