Alister Jack, the Secretary of State for Scotland, has called upon First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to provide an update on the potential reforms to the role of the Lord Advocate, as mentioned in the Scottish National Party (SNP) 2021 manifesto. Jack supports separating the roles of the Lord Advocate and Solicitor General. In a letter to Mr. Yousaf, he expressed his interest in learning about the Scottish Government's stance on altering the responsibilities of Law Officers and the next steps following Malcolm McMillan's research. Mr. Jack also mentioned that major changes to the Lord Advocate's role would require amendments to the Scotland Act 1998, which could only be made or enabled through UK Parliamentary legislation.
