External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar honored Indian-origin WWI soldier Nain Singh Sailani in Perth, Australia, where Sailani Avenue was named in his memory.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar paid tribute to Indian-origin soldier Nain Singh Sailani during his visit to Perth, Australia. Sailani Avenue in Perth was named after Sailani who served in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I. Sailani was a part of the 44th Infantry Battalion of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) and he was one of 12 known Anzacs from the Indian community who enlisted in 1916. Two of his comrades were killed in action during an offensive campaign by Germany in Belgium. Sailani was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, and the 1914/15 Star for his service. Jaishankar attended the two-day Indian Ocean Conference during his visit.
