Nigeria Customs Service arrested three individuals for trafficking elephant tusks valued at $16,000 to Asia in joint operation with Wildlife Justice Commission.

The Nigeria Customs Service has arrested three individuals for allegedly trafficking and exporting elephant tusks to Asia, with a total value of $16,000. The arrests took place in Lagos on multiple dates in January and February 2024, as part of an intelligence-led joint operation with the Wildlife Justice Commission. Nigeria's elephant population has decreased significantly due to poaching for ivory, habitat loss, and human-elephant conflict, with conservationists estimating a population decline from 1,500 to less than 400 over the past three decades. The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to ending the illegal wildlife trade and supporting global efforts to combat wildlife crime.
