A 285-year-old lemon believed to be a love token brought back from India in 1739, was auctioned off for £1,416 at Brettell's Auctioneers in Newport.
The lemon, which was discovered in the bottom drawer of a 19th-century chest during a house clearance, initially had a bid value of £40 but the bids escalated amongst 35 bidders.
The fruit contains inscriptions carved on it stating it was given by Mr P Lu Franchini to Miss E Baxter on November 4, 1739.
