Deschutes County health officials have confirmed a rare case of human plague in a local resident, marking Oregon's first reported case in nearly a decade. The individual is believed to have been infected by their symptomatic pet cat. Close contacts have been notified and provided medication to prevent illness. If diagnosed early, plague can be treated with antibiotics and poses little risk to the community. The last reported case in the state was in 2015.
