Bangladesh's National Board of Revenue (NBR) has withdrawn customs tariff, slashed regulatory duty on rice, sugar, and dates, and lifted value-added tax (VAT) on edible oil with immediate effect. The decision was made to boost supply and keep prices of essential items affordable during the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan, which is expected to begin in mid-March. The 25% customs duty for rice import has been removed, and the regulatory duty has been slashed to 5% from 25%. The import duty for dates has also been cut to 15% from 25%.
