NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in California lays off 530 workers and 40 contractors due to federal funding shortage, leading to a hiring freeze and budget cuts.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California will lay off 530 workers and 40 contractors due to a lack of federal funding. The layoffs represent about 8% of the Pasadena-based lab's workforce, and the budget constraints have also led to a hiring freeze, reduced contract values and cuts to burden budgets across the laboratory. In a memo to employees, Laurie Leshin, the director of JPL, wrote the lab is waiting for funding from Congress for the Mars Sample Return mission and will continue operating under tight budget constraints.
