GM recalls over 323,000 heavy-duty Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra trucks due to water-prone tailgate release switches leading to unexpected cargo release.

General Motors (GM) is recalling over 323,000 heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks from the 2020 through 2024 model years in the US due to a malfunction in the electronic tailgate release switches. Water can enter the switches, causing the tailgates to open while the vehicles are in park, which may lead to unsecured cargo falling out and creating road hazards, increasing the risk of crashes. GM is advising owners to check their tailgates before driving, and dealers will replace an exterior touchpad switch as a remedy. Owners will be notified starting March 18, and dealers have been instructed to stop selling affected vehicles until repairs are made. GM has 136 complaints about tailgates opening unexpectedly, with one minor injury and three minor property damage reports.
