Boston Mayor Michelle Wu extends fare-free MBTA bus routes 23, 28, and 29 for two years with an $8M city investment, initially funded through federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced on Tuesday that MBTA bus routes 23, 28, and 29 will continue to operate fare-free for another two years, thanks to an $8 million investment from the city. This program, which started back in August 2021 and expanded in February 2022, is funded through $350,000 per month of federal American Rescue Plan Act funds. The Boston administration chose to extend the fare-free trial period, which was initially set to end in February 2024, until March 2026.
