ACTU inquiry finds Australians being overcharged for essential goods and services.

The ACTU's inquiry into price gouging and unfair pricing, chaired by former ACCC Chair Professor Allan Fels, has found that Australians are being overcharged for essential goods and services. The report revealed that some businesses have too much market power, leading to higher prices and inflation. Corporate profits have added significantly to inflation, and some businesses are resorting to unfair price practices, such as loyalty taxes, drip pricing, and confusion pricing. The report recommends establishing a national competition and prices commission, strengthening competition law, and reviving the national competition policy.
