Xcel Energy, a major utility company in Minnesota, has proposed extending the lifespan of its two nuclear plants until the early 2050s to provide backup electricity during peak demand times. This move aligns with the company's goal to reduce its carbon emissions by 88% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The company is also planning to add 3,600 megawatts of new wind and solar facilities and 600 megawatts of battery energy storage to its energy mix.
