A school headteacher, named Paul Merrell, has been jailed due to his involvement in running an illegal streaming service. This business was worth around £450,000 and ran for four years, earning a profit of approximately £240,000. Merrell, aged 43, was a deputy headteacher at a school in Coventry throughout the majority of the period between January 2017 and January 2021. He later became the headmaster at Elmfield Rudolf Steiner School in Stourbridge at the time of his sentencing. He admitted to two offences under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. As a result of his actions, he has been sent to jail for twelve months. Merrell had developed a base of 2,000 customers during his time running this illicit business.
