NYPD fired K5 robot after it failed basic police tasks, required constant supervision, and was removed from Times Square subway station.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has fired a robot named K5 after it was unable to perform basic police tasks and required officers to babysit it. Deployed in September 2023 at the 42nd Street subway station in Times Square, the 400-pound robot was built by Silicon Valley-based startup Knightscope. However, the robot proved to be a nuisance, requiring constant supervision, being unable to handle stairs, and drawing endless ridicule. After completing its four-month pilot program, the robot has been retired and is now stored in a part of the city's busiest subway station.
