Northern Territory government partners with Anindilyakwa Land Council to establish a community justice group for a home-based prison alternative for low-risk offenders on Groote Eylandt island.

The Northern Territory government is partnering with the Anindilyakwa Land Council on Groote Eylandt island to address a growing social problem in the community. Young men caught in cycles of crime due to alcohol will soon be able to serve some of their prison sentences on home soil. The NT government's first legislated community justice group is being led by Matthew McKenzie and is designed to advise the newly re-established community court overseen by NT Chief Judge Elizabeth Morris. This alternative justice process involves sentences tailored to the needs of low-risk offenders, sending them to the Island's new healing center opening in March.
