India celebrates the global launch of UPI at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, allowing Indian tourists to use UPI for retail payments in France by scanning a merchant's QR code.

India lauded the formal launch of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Friday, with the Indian Embassy in France highlighting that the event marked a significant step towards making UPI global. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, made a post on X commending the launch. The UPI was formally launched at the Republic Day reception in Paris, which comes following an agreement between France and India in the digital payments sector in July 2023. As a result of this agreement, which was the first of its kind, Indian tourists are now able to make use of UPI for retail payments in France by scanning a QR code generated on the merchant website and initiating a payment using a UPI-powered app.
