Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters warn of labor shortage in Ontario's manufacturing sector, projecting 18,500 annual retirements from baby boomers and urgent need for worker training, investment and policy alignment.

The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) warn that Ontario's manufacturing sector has more than 18,900 vacancies, with about 7,000 new manufacturing jobs expected to open up in the province. The industry expects around 18,500 retirements from baby boomers between now and 2034. CME CEO Dennis Darby emphasizes the importance of manufacturing for Ontario's future and urges the provincial government to invest in training and upskilling workers. The labor shortage is particularly pronounced in the auto and electric vehicle sectors as EV production grows.
