Florida Senate advances bill (SB 1596) to amend labor laws for 16 & 17-year-olds, allowing longer working hours & earlier start times.

The Florida Senate has advanced a bill (SB 1596) that would amend certain labor laws for 16 and 17-year-olds, allowing them to work longer hours and not as late at night compared to the more extreme House bill that is being proposed. The Senate bill would allow 16 and 17-year-olds to work from 5:30 am to midnight, whereas under current law, the limit is from 6:30 am to 11 pm. This bill is sponsored by Zephyrhills Republican Senator Danny Burgess. The Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee has approved the proposal, while the full House will also be taking up its version (HB 49) of the bill.
