U.S. Steel has agreed to a $42 million settlement over air pollution violations, following accusations of violating federal clean air laws. The lawsuit claimed the company failed to report the release of pollutants into the air and continued to operate blast furnaces despite damage to pollution controls. The settlement includes $37 million worth of improvements to U.S. Steel's pollution control and plant reliability systems at its Mon Valley Works plants and a $5 million penalty to fund clean air efforts.
